Holi day on 11th Mar 1739: One of the most horrific days in the history of Delhi, after the massacre by Timur in 1398. The streets of Delhi ran red that day with so many rivers of blood. On the morning of 11th March, Nadir Shah rode from Chandni Chowk to Sunehri Masjid. A crowd had gathered & began pelting stones at the invader. Nadir escaped unhurt but a Persian officer who rode beside him was hit & killed. An infuriated Nadir Shah drew his sword. At this signal the horrific massacre began around 9 AM & went on & on. Hour after hour men, women children were dragged out of their houses & cut to pieces in the streets. When the horror finally ended some 5-6 hours later, anywhere btwn 50,000 to 80,000 were estimated to have been killed. The corpses lay on the street & the stench filled the air. The city was in a state of utter shock. Moreover, the world was watching - since Nadir Shah was quite a famous figure. And the signal it sent out to the world was that gone in the dust was the prestige of the house of Babur. The gates of India were open & anyone could walk in. World order changed that day! Just a few days earlier, the once legendary Mughal army had been beaten decisively at the battle of Karnal by Nadir
